Sustainability – the number 1 topic at Schulthess

Forest fires, rising sea levels, unpredictable weather events – in short: climate change. This is the reason why the issues of environmental protection and sustainability are central for each of us and for the future of our planet. Sustainability, by definition, means acting in a way that meets the needs of both present and future generations. It is based on the three pillars of ecology, economy and social issues. Schulthess is already thinking about tomorrow and is thus committed to sustainability so that future generations can also fully live out their needs. For Schulthess, this means high-quality, durable products, a spirit of innovation and fair, environmentally friendly and socially responsible production.

For Schulthess, this means high-quality, durable products, a spirit of innovation and fair, environmentally friendly and socially responsible production.

Swiss made

Our contribution to environmental protection begins with our production site in Switzerland. Schulthess washing machines, dryers and dishwashers have been developed, produced and delivered from Wolfhausen in the Zurich Oberland since 1845. This leads to great flexibility and short transport distances – up to 22 times shorter than when production takes place abroad. To also optimise the routes of our service technicians, Schulthess uses a digital route planning system that calculates the shortest possible routes. In this way, we save on pollutant emissions and reduce the burden on the roads, while our customer service employees are always quickly on site.

Our vehicle fleet is also constantly being modernised and replaced with even more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Sustainable action – also among employees

Schulthess also promotes sustainable action and thinking internally. For example, our employees are granted generous discounts on public transport. In addition, Schulthess always offers fresh tap water – ice-cold, temperate and sparkling – in glass carafes or the new fill-me bottles in the Schulthess design. These are bottles made of high-quality borosilicate glass, a special mineral glass that is heat-resistant, hygienic, easy to clean and robust. With every purchase of a fill-me bottle, one franc will be donated to Drink & Donate. This supports drinking water projects around the world. Schulthess thus consciously dispenses with PET bottles and invests in a sustainable alternative.

Order processing at Schulthess is completely paperless, with all processes from order entry to invoicing being completely electronic. We make our brochures, price lists and other documents available as e-papers; we only print selectively. We also impose a small symbolic charge for all our product brochures, which we donate to environmental organisations. By printing only what is strictly necessary, we save both paper and waste, while protecting the environment.

Swiss quality products

Schulthess machines have Swiss premium quality: They consist of high-quality materials that are expertly crafted. For example, the outer and inner washing drums of our washing machines are made of high-quality chrome steel instead of plastic, which makes them extremely hygienic and also recyclable. This high quality results in excellent durability, because Schulthess machines function reliably for many years. And although the initial purchase costs are higher than with other manufacturers, the effective costs over ten years are significantly lower than with cheaper products. So longevity not only means contributing to environmental protection, but is also easy on the wallet.

Repair options

If a machine is nonetheless defective, Schulthess customer service will repair it at a fair price even after many years. All spare parts are stored at the production site in Switzerland and can be shipped directly from there. All parts are available for several generations of appliances.

First-class energy efficiency through advanced washing technology

Schulthess wash programmes are designed to achieve perfect washing results with the lowest possible consumption of energy, water and detergent. Both the wash programmes and the mechanics of the washing machines themselves are constantly being optimised, because with improved technology and mechanics, the appliances are becoming more and more environmentally friendly. The principle is quite simple, being based on the Sinner’s circle or washing circle. It works like this: The washing process is basically built on four components: detergent, mechanics, time and temperature. These are directly related, which means that when one factor is changed, all the others are automatically adjusted as well. So if the mechanics of the washing machine are improved, the laundry becomes cleaner and the machine saves a lot of water, detergent and energy in one wash cycle. This has a very concrete impact on the environment and the budget.

Schulthess washing machines are highly energy-efficient. On the EU energy label, most of our machines have received an A+++ rating, which stands for the best washing and spinning performance with minimal water and energy consumption. Washing is also particularly resource-friendly with the hot water and rainwater connection.

Progress

By constantly improving machines and programmes, Schulthess has succeeded in reducing energy and water consumption by a factor of 7 over the last 40 years. In 1975, a washing machine consumed 55 litres of water and 0.49 kWh of energy per kilogram of laundry. Today, with only 6.8 litres per kilo of laundry, it requires 88% less water and only 0.087 kWh of energy.

For our earth

To make Schulthess as ecological as possible, we have committed ourselves to measurable environmental protection measures (ISO certification 14001) and are a corporate member of My Blue Planet.
